the “underground” brutalist galerie and italian caffè concept is where BELHAUS was born. what was once a place to meet for an espresso inside what was secretly a semi-private artists’ studio in downtown phoenix- actually, it’s kind of still that…
or, at least feels like it. the space never lost its creative touch.
with the gallery now having it’s own independent space in uptown phoenix, aftermarket operates as the “museum gift shop and caffè” to the museum gallery, BELHAUS. it’s still a place to discover a curated selection of original artwork from local and international artists, but also a place to be inspired, connect, and create.
everything here is manual. from the machine, to the menu, to our beans, our syrups, and design build-out. everything by hand, made in house by our team. keeping the feeling of the studio alive, and felt.
-and i believe it’s felt.
the menu typography is all handset, individual letters from a 1972 helvetica letra-set mounted onto a gessobord, and framed in steel. it hangs by the bar like a painting would, in disguise. our coffee beans, roasted by caffio. the syrups, in-house. the lumio and bizou are our staples. lumio was named after a small beach in corsica, and bizou, after our late studio *and shop* dog. long. live. bizou. the newsstand, meant to resemble a vintage parisian street kiosk that’d sell original drawings (or crêpes) along la seine, actually sells original works on paper, prints, objets d’art, and houses rotating djs.
the 6 (our suite number) is still the gallery logo to represent our beginnings. upside-down, it’s a g. representing the guy behind it. everything’s intentional, brutally honest, and true to us. all to tell a story. yet, you probably wouldn’t know unless you read this…
