The works, like new.

Belassen presents a collection of 11 paintings on canvas drop-cloth, pulled off the floor of his former Venice, CA studio. Marks of overspray, paint drips, thick acrylic blemishes, and shoe prints form the underlayer of these oil pastel lists on raw canvas. The “Essentials” Lists selected are some of his personal favorites, whether it be in composition, jargon, provenance, or storyline.

ESSENTIALS* opened Friday, 1 December 2023 at BELHAUS, and closed 31 December 2023.

This show, and these works, commemorate the growth of the series that garnered worldwide attention through the pandemic beginning in their paper form. From there, Belassen and local ceramic artist Augusta Smith joined forces to collaborate on a ceramic series, dubbed Set in Stone, that essentially set the paper lists, in stone.
